As someone who enjoys a good video or board game, it has slowly become my dream to have an epically nerdy den/rec room lined with retro video games, memorabilia, and artwork. A place where you can go and play any console you want or set up an awesome family game night. I have the starting of a room like this, but it still shares its purpose with my sewing room, the guest room, storage, and office. The one wall might be covered in figurines and Pokemon cards, but I want more.
Nick and I might be moving into a new house soon, and it’s gotten me thinking. What if this is my chance? What if we have a basement that we could transform into the ultimate geek secret lair! So I’ve been shopping around and here are some of the amazing things I’ve found.
Let’s start with the obvious: you’re going to need a massive TV for all the video games and movies you’ll be consuming in this room. In this absolutely ridiculous dream world that I’m living in right now, there would be two of these babies. That way Nick and I could be playing different games or an online game together without any problems.
Ironically enough, the next thing on my list for the nerd room is something that will block my view of those giant TV screens. VR! I have only tried VR once for about 15 minutes but it was one of the coolest experiences of my entire life. We don’t have the space for a rig right now, but oh would I love one!
Yes, of course, I need a full-sized Pip-Boy replica! I need it more than anything in fact! I’ve wanted one of these bad boys since they were first announced but I’ve never been quite able to justify it. But in this dream nerd paradise, Fallout needs representation!
Despite being in a basement and not the entire house, my fantasy lair still needs a nice welcome mat to let people know what they’re getting into. Here’s the perfect one to let people know that we mean business down here.
This is awesome! Part of building a truly awesome gaming room is to pay tribute to the history of video games. And that includes the glorious and infamous Nintendo Entertainment System. That gun would go in a place of honour and the system would be ready to play at any time.
Now, these are awesome! What is more welcoming than a happy, smiling Vault Boy, giving you a big thumbs up! Just don’t think too much about how putting up a thumb and closing one eye was a way to see if you were going to survive a nuclear bomb drop, and it’s fine. Look at this cuddly guy! He looks perfect for hiding behind when I’m watching a scary movie or like a great place to rest your controller when sitting down for a long session. Beep beep!
Now, this is how you light up a room! These would be perfect for a night spent in a dark room playing video games. They would provide just enough light that you could see where your drink is but not too much as to ruin the ambiance.
Finally, on the more practical side, a huge shelf to fit all of our board games, video games, DVDs, VHSs, and every other kind of media you can think of! I’m thinking about 3 of these, organized by type, console generation, and genre. It will be a glorious wall of everything I love.
